Major upgrades are being carried out to transform the Coodanup Foreshore into a more vibrant and better-connected space for Mandurah locals and visitors.

Guided by the City of Mandurah’s Coodanup Foreshore Master Plan, the significant upgrades have been split into five stages with a key focus on improving amenities and protecting the area’s natural environment.

Initial design planning for the project began in 2020, following a series of community consultations where locals provided feedback that helped shape the design of the upgrades.

Construction for Stage 1 began in 2023, with further community consultation periods held throughout the project for residents

Construction for Stage 1 began in 2023, with further community consultation periods held throughout the project for residents to have their say on future stages.

Our community has let us know protecting the natural environment while improving parks and public spaces are key priorities, and we’re excited to be delivering an enhanced Coodanup Foreshore that captures and maintains the original coastal setting.

What’s happening now?

Community engagement – Stages 4/5

The community consultation period for this stage of the project has now finished. Thank you to everyone who took the time to have their say!

Our team is currently reviewing all the feedback received, and will provide a summary of the survey results on this page in the coming weeks.

Feedback received as part of the consultation process will help shape the concept plans for stages 4/5 of the project. Once prepared, the community will be invited to view and provide further feedback on the concept plans.

Stage 4 includes the area from Beacham Street to William Street, while stage 5 ranges from William Street to the south-eastern end of John Street and includes the area around the Nairns Bird Hide.

Protecting our natural environment is important to us, so we’re placing a key focus on ensuring no trees are damaged during construction of stages 4/5.

What’s happening next?

Construction – Stage 3

Construction works for stage 3 of the project will kick off in the coming months, and are expected to be completed by July 2025.

Stage 3 works will focus on enhancing connection and useability between the Creery Wetlands and east of Wamba Road. The scope of works includes:

  • A formalised car park
  • Bench seating and signage
  • Shelter and picnic table facilities
  • Viewing area with seating
  • Bike racks
  • Estuary access via a native couch ramp
  • Yarning circle
  • Limestone walking trail

A series of boardwalks have already been renewed as part of the stage 3 works, improving safety and accessibility in the area.

You can view the concept plans for stage 3 in the documents section of this webpage.

Project History

A Coodanup Foreshore Master Plan was developed to provide strategic guidance for the area’s future. The foreshore is located on Peel Parade between Wanjeep Street and the end of John Street to the Serpentine River, Coodanup, on the northern foreshore of the Peel Harvey Estuary.

The Peel Harvey Estuary sits inside the boodjar (country) of the Bindjareb (Pinjarup) Noongar people. The Bindjareb people refer to the Peel Harvey Estuary as Djilba. This is the ancient name used for thousands of years. Both names are used on the Masterplan.

Why do we need a new plan and development?

A framework was needed to update the area, manage this valuable community space, and address future opportunities form a more vibrant space while respecting the local environment.

The Coodanup Foreshore is a large and popular reserve which spans approximately 2.6 kilometres and a total of 15.9 hectares. The foreshore forms a part of the Peel-Yalgorup system, which is listed under the Ramsar Convention's List of Wetlands of International Importance. The City recognises the foreshore reserve as a valued community asset with well-established facilities, trees and foreshore habitat and activities.

However, the previous standard of the foreshore falls short of the standard expected for key reserves that have a Regional Reserve classification. The opportunity to improve the reserve has been recognised and the City has worked to address this by developing a masterplan for the full project site.

Input from the local community is greatly valued and has been used to inform the design process, thank you to all that have taken part. Learn more about the process and community involvement by visiting the frequently asked questions (FAQs) and consultation report.

Works to replace a series of four boardwalks along the Coodanup Foreshore (between Wanjeep Street and Wamba Road) are now complete.

The new boardwalks provide a safer structure and have improved accessibility to the area, which has now re-opened to the public.

Completion of the boardwalk replacements marks the beginning of Stage 3 works on the Coodanup Foreshore upgrades, with the remaining works to be carried out in the coming months.

The next stage of Coodanup Foreshore upgrades will kick off in the coming weeks. The works will replace four boardwalks located between Wanjeep Street and Wamba Road and is set to commence on Monday, 9 December.

Access to the trail walk along the foreshore reserve will be limited during the period, with works expected to be complete by late December.

The boardwalk replacements will mark the beginning of Stage 3 works for the City of Mandurah’s Coodanup Foreshore upgrades, which have so far included the installation of new barbecues, picnic shelters, tables, paths and nature play equipment at the foreshore.

Stage 3 works will focus on enhancing connection and useability between the Creery Wetlands and east of Wamba Road. Along with boardwalk replacements, the works will include installation of:

    • A formalised car park
    • Bench seating and signage
    • Shelter and picnic table facilities
    • Viewing area with seating
    • Bike racks
    • Estuary access via a native couch ramp
    • Yarning circle
    • Limestone walking trail

Following completion of the boardwalk replacements in December, landscaping and civil works for Stage 3 of the project are scheduled to commence in March 2025, with completion expected by July 2025.

Stage 3 works have been shaped by community feedback received during a public consultation period in early 2024. During the period, the community highlighted the need to retain the foreshore’s existing character, and expressed a strong desire to protect the area’s natural assets.

Following community feedback, Stage 3 will deliver low native planting to protect the area’s natural spring, and will retain existing footpaths while renewing seating and picnic settings to improve accessibility in the area.

Upgrades to the Coodanup Foreshore are supporting our community to gather, play and experience nature in an accessible space.

Mandurah’s foreshores are a key piece of the city’s identity, and enhancing foreshores delivers on the City’s vision to provide inclusive and welcoming places, spaces and neighbourhoods.

Coodanup Foreshore Stage 1 and 2 construction is progressing on schedule, with all major concrete works completed.

The compacted limestone paths will be finished in the next week, along with kerbing around garden beds, paths, and the playground.

The irrigation tank has been installed on-site, and the artistic fabricated screening for the tank is set to be installed in mid-November.

Current works include the demolition of the existing footpath adjacent to Peel Parade to move the footpath inside the boundary and relocate the bollards onto the roadside to protect pedestrians. During this time, pedestrians will be directed onto the new path, which is already installed.

The extension to the existing car park is scheduled to start in the week of Monday, October 16, along with the reinstallation of bollards adjacent to the road.

The majority of park furniture will be installed in mid to late November, with the remaining furniture, nature play items, and the new playground items to be installed in late January 2024. The pétanque court and seating will also be installed in January 2024.

For more information on what works are being completed during this stage of the upgrade, view the Stage 1&2 Construction Plan.

The City is committed to minimising the impact of these works on the community, if you have any queries or concerns please contact us at 9550 3777 or council@mandurah.wa.gov.au
