Iso Art

Since 2011, every Tuesday, the Mandurah Plein Air Artists meet to paint outdoors. During isolation, we still paint and stay connected, but within the confines of our homes. Weekly challenges have us working outside our comfort zones and once complete, photos of everyone’s paintings are posted on the group’s Facebook page. Everyone is welcome to take part and it’s a good way to try outdoor painting without having anyone watching.

In addition to the group challenges, I have been using this time to experiment with techniques, styles colours and tools. One scene has been painted four times, in four completely different styles.

Painting my surroundings began as a way of documenting my time spent in isolation. Interestingly, a Social Distancing body of work is emerging, with each painting photographed, numbered and posted on social media. Some paintings work and some don’t, but by including “my learnings” the focus is on the process rather than the end result.
