What is the Rushton Master Plan?
The Rushton Master Plan is a strategic blueprint that will guide the future investment, development, enhancement, and management of Rushton Park sporting precinct and its surrounding areas. The plan aims to ensure that the precinct remains functional, vibrant, accessible, and sustainable for its sporting groups, local residents, broader Mandurah residents and visitors.
Why is Rushton Park important to Mandurah?
Rushton Park is the premier sporting precinct within Mandurah. The precinct is home to a variety of community sporting clubs including bowls, croquet, tennis, Australian rules football at both a community and State level, and home to regional netball. The Precinct is approximately 18.5 hectares in the center of Mandurah and also serves as space for local residents to meet and recreate.
Why did the Master Plan need updated?
The current Master Plan for the Rushton Park precinct is over 10 years old and is no longer fit for purpose. A new Master Plan for the precinct is required that is functional, achievable, and sustainable for future capital investment to improve the efficiency of the land together with meeting the needs of existing and future user groups. The plan examines the precinct from a fresh perspective and aims to use the principles of co-location, shared use, and multi-purpose accessible design in alignment with core principles of the Community Infrastructure Plan together with economic objectives.
What are the main objectives of the Master Plan?
How were the priorities for the Master Plan determined?
Priorities were identified through a combination of community surveys, stakeholder workshops, technical assessments, and best-practice urban planning principles. Public feedback played a key role in shaping the vision and goals.
Will the netball and tennis clubs be relocated?
Yes, the State Government has committed $20 million for a new Mandurah Netball and Multi-Purpose Hard Courts Complex. A new site is yet to be confirmed by the State Government however a decision will be made by the end of the year (2025). Until the new facilities are complete, the netball and tennis clubs will remain at Rushton Park.
What are the expected benefits of the Master Plan?
When will the plan be rolled out?
The Rushton Park Master Plan is a big project that will take place over the next 10 years. The first step is to move netball and tennis to a new Regional Netball and Multi-Use Complex. This move will create space for the planned expansions and improvements at Rushton Park.
We'll create an implementation plan to guide the work over the next decade, making sure we consider important steps and funding opportunities. This plan will be presented to the Council for approval along with the final Master Plan.
Who will be paying for the upgrades at Rushton Park?
The relocation of netball and tennis facilities to a new Regional Netball and Multi-Use Complex has secured $20 million in State funding, committed to supporting the growth of netball. The City of Mandurah will also contribute additional funds for the tennis component of the project through our Long Term Financial Plan, and we will seek external funding where appropriate.
As we progress with the Rushton Park Master Plan, we will consider future cost estimates and identify funding options in the next stage of planning. Implementing the major infrastructure assets will require significant funding, and the City will advocate for support through State and Federal elections.
