About the Public Health Plan

Local governments play a vital role in maintaining and improving the health and wellbeing of their communities.

The City of Mandurah does this by providing services, support, parks, and natural spaces. These things can make a big difference to people’s health and help build stronger, more connected communities.

Under the WA Public Health Act 2016, state and local governments must create a Public Health Plan. This plan includes:

  • Health profile – information about the health of people in the area
  • Strategic plan – a plan for improving health

All local councils must have their plan ready by 4 June 2026.

Mandurah’s Public Health and Wellbeing Plan explains how the City will support community health. It focuses on key health issues found through local data and community feedback:

  • Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention: Many people in Mandurah have long-term health problems like arthritis, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and mental health issues. These affect daily life and increase the need for health services.
  • Mental Health: Mental health is a big concern, especially for young people and those living alone. The plan supports activities, services, and safe spaces to help people feel better.
  • Socioeconomic Disadvantage: Some suburbs face challenges like lower incomes, fewer jobs, and less access to health care. The plan aims to make health fair for everyone.
  • Community Demographics: Mandurah has more older adults and Aboriginal people than other areas. The plan includes actions that respect their needs and cultures.

The plan matches the State Public Health Plan and focuses on four main goals:

  • Promote – Help people live healthy lives
  • Prevent – Support programs that stop health problems before they start
  • Protect – Watch for and respond to health and environmental risks
  • Enable – Provide health protection for the community

How we have developed this Plan

We worked with community groups and organisations to create the draft plan. This included in-person and online meetings with groups that support priority populations. We wanted to find key health issues, service challenges, and ways to work together.

We also ran an online survey to get feedback from City staff, community networks, and residents. We reviewed other recent consultations to make sure everything was consistent.

The feedback showed common concerns across different groups, and these are included in the plan.
