Falcon Coastal Shared Path
Did you know that we have over 625km of pathways around Mandurah? That's about here to somewhere in between Kalbarri and Shark Bay!
These pathways form a part of our big picture Cycle and Walkability Plans to help connect our community.
As part of these plans, we’re finalising the updated design for a new trail along the Falcon coast. The path will run for around 4 kilometres along the coastline, starting at Gretel Drive and finishing at Cesia Lane. It links into existing coastal paths, and will connect key parts of the Falcon community, including beaches, parks and local streets. The path will provide a safer, accessible, and continuous coastal route for walkers and riders along our coastline.
This path route has been identified in the City’s Cycle Plan as a priority project and is a critical link in the Island Shared Use Trail project (part of the Peel Harvey Estuary Trails project).
The path will be constructed within the existing road reserve, which will involve narrowing some existing coastal roads, including Spinaway Parade, Panamuna Drive, and Avalon Parade. The alignment follows existing paths through reserves to minimise environmental impacts.
Safety for cyclists and pedestrians will be improved by removing more than 100 ‘conflict points’ at intersections and residential driveways that are currently being experienced by path users on the existing concrete footpath.
The Falcon Shared Path has also been designed to help us stay connected to our beautiful coast while protecting the dunes and we’ve followed existing footpaths as much as possible to reduce our impact on the environment. The path’s location also considers future risks from coastal changes (such as erosion, storm surges and sea level rise), based on the City’s Southern Beaches Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Planning (CHRMAP) Strategy.
The path is built with a minimum 20-year asset life in mind. In some locations there may be some impacts on the path within a 10-year timeframe, however the City is aware of this risk and will proactively manage any impacts if they occur. By taking this approach, we’re trying our best to balance the needs of current and future users and helping to keep our coastline accessible for everyone, now and into the future.
How you can get involved
Stage 1 Community Feedback Opportunity: Complete
In 2022, the City invited local residents, path users and the broader Mandurah community to provide feedback on the initial concept design for the Falcon Coastal Shared Path.
The City considered and incorporated this feedback where appropriate (including revised alignment near the Falcon Foreshore), and has worked with the WA Government Department of Transport to prepare an updated design that reflects the needs of our community and aligns with the broader-use trail pathway.
Stage 2 Community Feedback Opportunity: Now open
We are now sharing the amended design with our community - this is the final proposed draft of the design. We invite anyone with major concerns to complete a submission or get in touch and talk to a member of the project team.
Your feedback at this stage will help the City to finalise the design and delivery details before construction commences in 2026. View the updated path design and have your say in the survey below.
This project is proceeding, supported by a $4.8m funding contribution from the Australian Government.
