What is the Street Tree Masterplan?

Street trees and green verges have important environmental value and keep our streets healthy and resilient.

The Street Tree Masterplan is an outline of how trees can enhance verges and road reserves. It aims to improve the current and future canopy cover throughout the city. To choose where trees should go we consider criteria such as:

  • hardiness to disease and pests
  • stormwater collection
  • aesthetic value
  • streetscape character
  • habitat for local species
  • community appreciation
  • whether the species is native

This plan is for all new plantings, areas for subdivision, and current verges. This is only

Street Tree Planting Coodanup – Steerforth Drive Area

In July next year, the City of Mandurah is offering a special community street tree planting to residents in Coodanup. Trees provide shade and cool our city, they make our neighbourhoods more beautiful, contribute to better health for our community and are food and home for our native wildlife (because native wildlife need to be able to move around our city, too!). Street trees play a really important role in keeping our neighbourhoods healthy and thriving.

The Coodanup community have told us that they care about the benefits of trees and want to see more in their neighbourhood, and we have listened. This is why we are excited to run our first ever Community Street Tree Planting event, which will be held in the Steerforth Drive area. We’d love to invite all residents in the area to help care for our local wildlife and make the area a shadier, more beautiful place to live by getting involved in this project.

As part of this planting event, we are offering you a free street tree for your verge. The tree chosen for your area by the City is the Yellow Gum (full size or dwarf variety depending on location of powerlines). This species was chosen for the Street Tree Masterplan as it is best suited to the environmental conditions of the area and the benefits of trees that the community has told us matters to you.

If you don’t believe the Yellow Gum is suitable for your verge, this page also includes information on some alternative tree options available to you. Each of the species has its own value, such as beautiful flowers, a home for native wildlife, shade-providing, or all of these! If you are not happy with any of these choices for your verge you can contact us and we will do our best to find an alternative. The opportunity to choose your tree and be part of this community project is open until December 10th. This makes sure we have enough time to order the trees, plan the community event and plant during Winter 2022. If you do not select a tree by this date, no tree will be planted on your verge. All you have to do is fill in the form mailed to your address and return using the Reply Paid envelope or fill in the form electronically below.

We’d also love to see you get involved in the planting at the community event during Winter 2022. Everyone in the area is invited to help plant these trees in your neighbourhood and we’ll provide a free sausage sizzle after the event to thank you for being part of this project. Following the planting, the City will take care of the tree to help give it the best start in its new home and will provide watering, mulching and maintenance for two years. After that, we’ll continue to prune and maintain the tree as required.

How to have your say on the planned species for the Steerforth Drive area.

Check how the Yellow Gum will look along your street by downloading the street map for your address from the documents section. If you are unsure whether your verge lies under a powerline, you can also check this here. If you have powerlines on your property, the Dwarf variety has been chosen.

If you are unhappy with the species planned by the City, download the Street Tree Species List to see the species that could be planted on your verge. Each species has its own benefits such as beautiful flowers, wildlife attracting, shade-providing, or all of these! If you have powerlines on your property we have provided a different selection of species options that are safe to plant underneath.

If you would like to choose the species on your verge, do not want a tree, or would like to discuss an alternative, please provide comment below or contact Eliot Besson at 9550 3293 or Eliot.Besson@mandurah.wa.gov.au by the 10th of December 2021.

Please note: Some large verges may offer enough space to plant two or three trees. Please contact Eliot Besson on 9550 3293 if you have any concerns.

  • Please complete this electronic form to choose your street tree species or to opt-out of having a street tree on your verge.
