Coastlines naturally change over time. The City of Mandurah is working to identify how vulnerable its northern beaches and adjacent development are to coastal processes (erosion and flooding) through a Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP) project.
The objective of the project is to identify immediate, short (25 year), medium (25-50 year) and long term (50-100 year) coastal hazard risks and to plan for future land use and development in light of a changing coastal environment.
The project will provide advice on how the impacts of a changing coastline will influence development decisions in the area. The project will seek feedback on impacts and concerns of affected community members or groups. This will ensure that the adaptation plans are robust, fair and respond to existing community values.
This project aligns with and supports the State Government approach for decision-making in relation to coastal hazards.

The City of Mandurah is working to identify future potential impacts from coastal processes (erosion and flooding) to the northern beaches and adjacent development areas. The Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP) project will assess coastal risks and identify planning and management actions that respond to expected changes along the northern coastline.
To inform the project, the City of Mandurah is is inviting community members to provide input into the CHRMAP.
The City is planning a community workshop to discuss:
What the community values about the coast
Options for managing risks to maintain features most important to the community
How coastal adaptation gets funded
CHMRAP Workshop: Date: 26 August 2020
Time: 5.30pm to 7.30pm
Venue: Mandurah Surf Club
Due to COVID, numbers are limited and registrations are now closed as the workshop is full.
SURVEY NOW CLOSED - Register for Community Focus Group which will be rescheduled once COVID-19 restrictions are eased.
Responses to this survey will give the consultant team an understanding of the key values of the study area for the Mandurah Northern Beaches Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan.
The study area extends from Roberts Point in Halls Head to Madora Bay in the north, excluding the Mandurah Estuary and the estuary channel entrance. The study area encompasses five main coastal project areas:
Mandurah Northern Beaches - Our Coastal Future has finished this stage
This consultation is open for your feedback - check the key dates above
and opportunities on this page to provide your input to the project.
This stage sets the scene of the coastal environment and identifies community values for the northern beaches and surrounding areas.
Risk identification
Mandurah Northern Beaches - Our Coastal Future has finished this stage
A coastal hazard assessment will be undertaken by modelling erosion and inundation hazards along Mandurah's northern beaches for the current year (2019), as well as future planning timeframes of 10, 25, 50 ad 100 years (to 2120). We will present the outcomes of this assessment to the community once available.
Vulnerability assessment and risk evaluation
Mandurah Northern Beaches - Our Coastal Future has finished this stage
Informed by the values identified by the community, the team will undertake a vulnerability and risk assessment that identifies what parts of Mandurah's northern beaches and vulnerable to erosion or flooding, and where risk levels are intolerable so that adaptation decisions are required. We will share the outcomes of this assessment to the community once available.
Risk treatment
Mandurah Northern Beaches - Our Coastal Future is currently at this stage
In this stage, we will invite the community to join adaptation planning workshops. In these workshops, the community will be directly involved in evaluating how effective various adaptation options are to maintain the values that are important in the area.
The outcomes of these workshops will inform an adaptation plan that recommends the most appropriate coastal adaptation options based on a variety of social, cultural, environmental and economic considerations.
Draft CHRMAP report
this is an upcoming stage for Mandurah Northern Beaches - Our Coastal Future
The draft Coastal Hazard Risk Management Adaptation Plan will be advertised to the public for feedback.
Final CHRMAP
this is an upcoming stage for Mandurah Northern Beaches - Our Coastal Future
The final report will be presented to Council for endorsement.
